Native Shoreland Restoration Project

This privately-funded project will restore the Executive Residence property’s natural shoreline along Lake Mendota by planting native flowers, grasses, shrubs, and trees to provide erosion control, prevent runoff, enhance the wildlife habitat, and support pollinators. This effort is designed to be a model for other lakeshore homeowners to follow.

Several environmental groups have been advocating for this project for more than a decade, including the Clean Lakes Alliance, Yahara WINS, the Rock River Coalition, Jefferson County Land and Water Conservation Department, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Extension Lakes, Dane County Land and Water Resource Department, and Resource Environmental Solutions.

The restoration plan has been approved by the State Capitol and Executive Residence Board (SCERB) in two phases.

Phase One was completed in October of 2022. Phase Two was completed in September of 2024.

The plants are native and have been chosen for many specific reasons including the ability to prevent erosion and run-off and for their pollinator friendliness.
